For instance, Jenny lived with her grandmother in an apartment in the West End of Vancouver, because her parents were too young and irresponsible. She heard her Gramma telling Mrs. Chubb that, the day after she moved in.

It was Mrs. Chubb’s job to keep Gramma’s apartment clean and tidy. Other kids used to laugh at her and think Jenny was dumb because she wore thick glasses and her stuttering didn’t do much to help either. Jenny was different in other ways too.

Usually, children of nine want to have fun and adventures, but Jenny was a more serious child. What she wanted more than anything else, was to make a difference in the world. You know, to make the world a better place to live in.

Jenny did have one friend though and Gramma always said “One friend is all you need.” She was right too. Micah Pedersen had called to tell Jenny that he was going to Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park tomorrow and would she like to go with him. Jenny was very excited. The lake was frozen over so she went and got her skates and put them by the door so that she would be ready as soon as Gramma said it was time to go. Gramma said that the lake hadn’t been frozen this solidly for, oooh it must be going on for six years, yet Jenny was sure she remembered skating on it when she was younger.
